---- The happiest thing is to appreciate the Great Wall from a distance on the tour bus. The Wall is like a Giant dragon lying among the mountains. I truly understood what "wonder" means when I saw it.
---- The world-known Badaling Great Wall has been restored and it is no longer what it used to be. Really a pity! Anyway, I've been to the Great Wall, and it still looks great.
4. Victoria Peak (Hong Kong)
---- My favorite part of my visit. Took the tram up (it puts the "fun" in "funicular") and then after enjoying the view and a nice plate of fresh oysters and a couple bloody mary's at the outdoor restaurant at the top of the peak took a few hours walking back down along HK's crazy switchback roads past amazing mountainside villas and through beautiful foliage, little shrines... and of course great views along the way.
Wear a good pair of walking shoes, bring a bag for a few snacks and some water, and you're good to go...
---- what a view! worth 2 trips for day and night views of the city and harbor!
---- Oysters on the half shell and a Grey Goose martini on the Peak Lookout terrace: Heavenly.
5. Three Gorges (Yangtze Cruise)
---- I visited Sanxia in 1994. The Three Gorges is very powerful, but I like the beauty and spirituality of The Small Three Gorges much better. I still remember the White Horse Hole, Panda Hole and Hanging Coffins. 4 out of 5, for sure.
---- The scenery, accommodation and food are all good, but transportation is not convenient. Also, dont expect to do any shopping there.
---- Ladies and Gentlemen of Sanxia, My wife is a kindergarten teacher, so one of our traditions is traveling for New Year's Eve. This year, we're headed for the Three Gorges. Will the Three Gorges be open, or will everything be shut down (restaurants, museums, etc) for the New Year holiday? Thanks a lot.
---- The food is soooo spicy - maybe becoz it's partially located in Sichuan province? Not sure.
6. Huang Shan or Mt. Huang or Yellow Mountain (Anhui province)
---- This place is a rip-off. The mountains are awesome, but no one will let you go off the trail if you want to hike. I stayed in a super crappy dorm room with no running water or heat and it was 100 RMB. I know I got ripped-off, but there are no cheap options for people who want to stay on the mountain. They will even charge you to put up your tent on the basketball court (the only flat spot on the mountain), where they rent out tents to Chinese who are "camping" for the first time for over 100 RMB a night. Everyone says you can go off and explore the mountain on your own, but everytime I tried I got yelled at by a security guard.
---- I went to Huang Shan in May. The first day was rained the whole day and I could see nothing - wasted the whole day in the hotel. The second day I went to the West Sea Valley, and the view there was breathtaking. I strongly recommend visiting the West Sea. It is a pity if you come to the Yellow Mountain without visiting the West Sea Valley. Check the weather forecast and sure the weather is good for hiking, otherwise you'll only see fog...
---- Huang Shan is really impressive. The fantastic pines, grotesque rocks and sea of clouds are really live up to their reputation. If possible avoid going with a tour group, otherwise you won't have enough time to enjoy the beautiful view.
---- Staying in a hotels on the mountain is a good idea. Although the facilities and services are not as good as those in other places, the landscape will make your stay perfect, especially the West Sea Valley.
---- Yellow Mountain in winter is also beautiful. But I'd like to recommend another spot nearby called Jiulong Scenic Area, only 15 away. The bamboo woods and the waterfall are both beautiful, and the water is jade green. This is also the place where the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was shot.
---- I went to Huang Shan in January. It was raining at the foot of the mountain, while the sun was shining on the top. Some of the spots were not open to visit at that time, but the view was great, and I saw the Sea of Clouds, which was really beautiful. It is said that the perfect time for visiting Huang Shan is from June to September, but the winter view has its own flavor.
7. Tian'anmen Square (Beijing)
---- The shape that most perfectly incorporates Maoist ideology
---- It's always crowded, I still haven't gone to see the "Maosoleum". I hear the preservation techniques were not optimal and Mao has turned a rather disturbing shade of bruise-yellow.
---- I went there during the Chinese National Holiday. I was still shocked when I saw so many people -though I had actually been prepared for the potential crowds. I was in line for two hours to see the body of Chairman Mao. Nothing is allowed to be taken into the Mao's Mausoleum. The night view of Tian'anmen Square is worth seeing, very beautiful!
---- I only knew that many people would be there to see the flag-raising ceremony but I didnt expect that people watching the flag-lowering would be just as many.
---- Great! But some sites only receive guests in the morning, such as Mao's Mausoleum. Too crowded during national day holiday. Better avoid that time.
---- It's good to take a walk there in the evening. The night view is splendid.
---- This square must be the only one in the world with so many people watching the flag-raising ceremony. I stayed in a hotel a little far from Tiananmen Square. The receptionist told me that the ceremony would be held at 6:47 a.m. the next day, therefore I requested a wake-up call at 6:00 a.m. I took a taxi to the Square. When I arrived it's half past 6, but there were already many people waiting there. Policemen and guards are patrolling around. The PLA soldiers appeared on time. They marched along Changan Jie and reached the flagpole at exactly the same footpace. The honor guard raised the flag as the Chinese national anthem went. What a precise and solemn performance! I was deeply impressed.
---- Those patterns carved on the ceiling, arches and poles are gorgeous. Some of the walls need maintenance.
8. Oriental Pearl TV Tower (Shanghai)
---- I recommend Bund Sightseeing Tunnel 40 RMB for one way, 50 RMB for round trip. you can buy the package include going to observation desk.
---- I agree on elvahappiest, the History Musuem is worth going.
---- My suggestion is to climb the tower on a sunny day so that you can have a bird's view of Shanghai's beautiful skylines. The History Musuem in the Tower is recommended. You can learn a lot about Shanghai's past and present.
---- A place for first time Shanghai visitors. If you want to have a photo taken with it, I suggest you to take the photo on the Bund.
---- Very very fast lift! Feel like flying into the sky.
---- its one of Shanghai's landmark buildings. strongly recommend!
9. Summer Palace (Beijing)
---- The grounds are immense. To spend anything less that a day there would be a waste.
