I was reading a New York Times interview with Megan Fox the other day. She articulated how women have an aversion toward her because she’s, well, a fox. And she is. Fox is a fox no matter how overdone the pun.
When women judge other women, there are two types of ‘hot’ she can be: ‘girl hot’ or ‘guy hot.’ The former is a woman who is classically beautiful, elegant and poised. In other words, she’s not a threat and thus, is respected and celebrated by other women. But if she’s the latter (‘guy hot,’ if you will) - she better watch out.
Fox understands: “Women tear each other apart. Girls think I’m a slut, and I’ve been in the same relationship since I was 18. The problem is, if they think you’re attractive, you’re either stupid or a wh*re or a dumb wh*re. The instinct among girls is to attack the jugular.”
We're reinforcing the same stereotypes we’re fighting.
Why are we so self-defeating? Even feminists unleash their claws and snarl at society’s sexy female rebels; as if only certain types of women deserve the feminist defense. Since when did the ‘sisterhood’ become so elitist?
It’s easy to hate a woman because she’s a perceived threat (i.e. she’s younger, curvier, thinner, sexier than us). We resent other women because of our own insecurities. We can be so judgmental; we’re our harshest critics. How can we expect society to stop objectifying women when we’re still doing it ourselves?
Women are women. Until we can embrace each other for the people we are rather than our sex appeal and waist sizes, we’ll continue to trip each other in our scramble for equality and self-acceptance instead of help and guide each other on the journey.
You can choose to dislike Megan Fox if she calls you names and disrespects your mother, but don’t hate her because she’s hot. Come on, ladies; we’re better than that.
