The North-Keralese Hindus worship a large number of deities, among which a separate, unique group is known as the Teyyam gods. Amongst all gods, Teyyam gods are the most violent. Each of the three hundred Teyyam gods has its own specific ritual. The Teyyam performer takes on the appearance of the god to whom the ritual is dedicated, each deity looking different.

The film shows one of the North-Kerala’s many yearly performances of the Vishnumurti Teyyam ritual. It takes place in the Teyyam temple of nattakal, as the main part of the village's early temple festival. The festival is organised, and largely funded by a temple committee, consisting of higher caste villagers.

The Nattakal Vishnumurti Teyyam is performed exclusively by a group of men, called the Pallai. The Pallai are paid professional Teyyam performers, belonging to a lower caste. All Pallai are closely related to one another. One of the performers impersonates the god Vishnumurti, others have supporting roles and play the drums…

Altine Ba is a 27 years old Peul woman, living in a small village in the Ferlo Desert, in Northern Senegal. Her daily life is full of duties: she spends many hours collecting water at the well, gathering firewood, careing for her children, cooking for her extended family.

Altine is the carrier of values, culture and knowledge of adaption to the harsh environment of the Sahel. Daily she carries on her shoulders and head the water – a symbol of life and love…

The documentary is the first of a three-part series focussing on the role of women in Senegal – in the light of social, cultural and environmental changes taking place in the country.

A widely unknown ancient minority of the Karakachans live in the Balkans, about 6 000 of them in Bulgaria and 12 000 in Greece. Their semi-nomadic way of life was destroyed to a large extent by the orders of the Bulgarian government in the late 1950’s to join the collective farms. The film affects like an incatation against the extinction of the Karakachan ethnic group and argues against their belief that "when the Karakachans come to an end, the world will come to an end, too."

The Danish film maker Lars von Trier is currently one of the most controversal directors. His films, including Breaking the Waves and The Idiots, incite vehement and often contradictory reactions, and the wildest rumours are circulating about his methods. For example, he is said to be unable to direct his actors, leaving it to others.

In the spring of 1997, fellow-director Jesper Jargil was requested by Von Trier to make screen tests of individual actors, in preparation of the making of The Idiots. Jargil agreed, on the condition that he could be present during the entire shooting period of The Idiots to make his own documentary on Lars von Trier.

The first image of Martha Suter were taken more than 25 years ago. Martha’s world has not changed a lot during this period. Her mother had developed an illness during pregnancy and Martha was born deaf and blind. She has never heard a sound or seen an image in her life. Today Martha is 37 years old. In Western Siberia, in the woods on the banks of Vatylka River, the Selkups live. They have made living off game and fishing from the prehistorical times. Today, 5 000 souls of remaining ethnos, have mostly moved from forests to villages. Yuri Kalin is one of the few Selkups who keep going on traditional nomadic life.
